Trays
Most people do not consider a simple tray to be a Judaica item. However, because Jews tend to beautify anything used to perform a Mitzvah, or commandment, even the tray used to hold candlesticks or to serve food on Shabbat may be made of sterling silver, simply because it is used to hold something that is used to perform a commandment.
Sterling silver serving trays come in several different shapes, including circles, ovals, octagons and rectangles. You also have the option of having handles attached to the side or not. In terms of designs, most sterling silver trays are rather conservative and have traditional floral patterns and moulding on them, although it is possible to find trays with other designs such as bands, diamond shapes and pearls.
If you would like a sterling silver tray that is more unique, you do not have to stop with floral patterns. There are numerous trays – especially Challah Trays - that have engraved words in them, such as "Holy Shabbat" together with the seven species.
If you would like to give a unique gift for an occasion like a wedding or housewarming, consider engraving the couple’s names in the tray. As an alternative, consider having Judaica symbols or a symbolic verse engraved along the outermost band of the tray, such as the Old City of Jerusalem or the blessing said before eating bread. If you prefer an item that looks like an antique and remain a decorative item, consider an engraving like the Luchot – the two Tablets – in the centre of the tray and the blessing said before the reading of the Torah around the outside.
